DEVELOPING A COMMISSIONED FOOD DESIGN

DRIVEN BY A SENSE OF PLACE

This was a piece commissioned by the (Dunedin) UNESCO City of Literature that formed part of publication of that was shared across the global network of 116 cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities network. The publication has contributions from 10 of the 20 cities of literature from around the world.

This project involved the development and presentation of a concept (the Dunedin Sound as an important literary tradition that is part of a wider movement of creative practice in Dunedin), writing of the Dunedin Sound as a story of place and the development and photographing of the dish for presentation in the UNESCO publication.

Bird Dog, a song composed by Graeme Downes of The Verlaines, was chosen as it was possible to tell the story of the connection between Downe's work and the development of a local craft beer of the same name. It also provided a number of possibilities for the development of a new version of the 'story' with the design of the new dish which was both informed by the song and local ingredients.

The project was a collaboration with Adrian Woodhouse with contributions from Richard Emerson, Graeme Downes and Hayden Parsons (whose images appear here). I researched and wrote the story, contributed to dish idea generation, scouted photography locations and co-directed the photo shoot.
